He was 53 years old when he was shot dead on October 18, 2013, following a long battle over access to public lands. Campbell's wife dialed 911 to report the confrontation, which lead to her husband being charged with deliberate homicide. Newman was found shot with two bullets, including one in his back. Campbell claimed that he shot Newman in self-defense after he allegedly pointed his gun at him.
