Sections of the tunnel have even collapsed since being out of action. Recently deemed as a safety hazard, future public access has been denied. An emergency closure was put in place in February last year which saw small metal gates placed at both ends. Built in 1882, the first train didn't pass through until 1890 \- and it was only used for 70 years. Buried under grass and overgrown plants, the horseshoe-shaped tunnel means you cannot see from one end to the other. However, if you stood in the middle, the angle of the bend lets you see light from both entrance and exit. Despite being a heritage feature in the area, the tunnel isn't listed and conversations of new plans for the site have already started taking place.
