AUTHORITIES in Kyiv have started dishing out potassium iodine pills over fears of a Russian nuke attack. The city council of the Ukrainian capital confirmed it is providing evacuation centres with the pills in preparation of a potential nuclear strike. The pills contain potassium iodine, which can help block the absorption of harmful radiation (such as radioactive Iodine 131) by the thyroid gland in the event of a nuclear disaster \- if taken just before or immediately after exposure to nuclear radiation. That is based on the assumption that only radioactive Iodine is being used. Kyiv authorities said in a statement they will be distributing the pills in areas contaminated by nuclear radiation if there is a need to evacuate.
