JOE Biden was mocked for stumbling over Rishi Sunak's name in a speech praising the new PM's appointment as a "groundbreaking moment". The 79-year-old said: "Just today, we've got news that 'Rashid Sanook' is now the prime minister. As my brother would say, 'Go figure!'" The US president has been mocked after his terrible mispronunciation of Rishi Sunak's name Speaking during a ceremony at the White House marking the Hindu festival of Diwali he called it "pretty astounding" and a "groundbreaking moment". Sunak, 42, is a practising Hindu and the first non-white PM. The US president later tweeted: "Congratulations to Rishi Sunak on becoming Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. "Together, I look forward to enhancing our cooperation on issues critical to global security and prosperity, including continuing our strong support for Ukraine." He said: "I look forward to working with Prime Minister Sunak to strengthen this relationship as we continue to address ongoing global concerns, including Russia's illegal and unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine, economic uncertainty, and climate change. "I also look forward to collaborating with Prime Minister Sunak to bolster our important economic relationship as we negotiate a comprehensive, ambitious, and inclusive Canada-United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement, as well the UK's accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. "Together, we will remain focused on creating good middle-class jobs and opportunities for businesses on both sides of the Atlantic, while driving economic growth that benefits everyone. Speaking outside Number 10 on Tuesday, the incoming PM had referenced Russia's invasion of Ukraine twice, saying: "Putin's war in Ukraine has destabilised energy markets and supply chains the world over." Zelensky added that he hoped Sunak would "overcome all the challenges facing British society and the whole world today". The Kremlin said that Russia sees no reason to expect relations with the UK to improve under Sunak. French president Emmanuel Macron said the two countries would work together to tackle the challenge of the war in Ukraine. He said: "Congratulations to Rishi Sunak, who has become Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. "Together we will continue working to tackle the challenges of the moment, including the war in Ukraine and its many consequences for Europe and the world." Australia's treasurer, Jim Chalmers, called Sunak a great friend of Australia and said: "I don't think it's insignificant a country like the United Kingdom has its first prime minister of colour." Indian PM Narendra Modi had already offered his "Warmest congratulations" to Sunak, who was announced as the next PM on the first day of the festival of Diwali.
