Harrowing pictures from the scene show survivors desperately trying to climb up the remains of the bridge while others attempted swimming to safety. An eyewitness called Madan said: ...I was about to set my foot on the bridge when I heard the loud thud it came down crashing. ...We rushed to safe place after witnessing people falling into the waters and some even got trapped and screamed for help. It attracted many sightseers celebrating the Hindu festival of lights, Diwali, and Chhath Puja holidays over the weekend. Authorities are reportedly investigating whether the company that runs the bridge and sells tickets to pass across it had completed the proper safety checks ahead of the holiday season.
