He said Border Force staff simply assumed all arrivals wanted to claim asylum, and so failed to keep a close eye on them. He added: "If we don't have a record of people coming into the country, then we do not know who is threatened or who is threatening." He said officials warned that the sheer numbers of arrivals meant they were "concerned they cannot meet the country's national security requirements". Mr Neal also criticised the Home Office's "poor" response to the surge. He said the "system is overwhelmed" because the department refused to move from an "emergency response to what has rapidly become steady state".
