The specialists released a new statement on November 20, Fox News reported. The group said: ...When The Case Breakers approached officials about a new Zodiac suspect last spring, five police and state agencies would not cooperate. ...But last week, the man who runs the 10-year cold case team, Thomas J. Colbert, received a tip from his long-time sources in the remote town of deceased Gary Francis Poste: ...They had verified the existence of an evidentiary goldmine.... The Case Breakers – a crew is comprised of more than 40 former law enforcement investigators, journalists, and military intelligence officers – previously revealed they discovered Poste's identity after years of digging through new forensic evidence and his darkroom. According to the group, it took ...several hours... for lead investigator Thomas J Colbert ...to cautiously box up the historic haul and forward it to the team members, standing by at private forensic labs in three states.... Last month the Case Breakers said ciphers the Zodiac sent to newspapers and police bragging about his kills also point to Poste. The Zodiac Killer is known to have targeted at least seven victims between 1968 and 1969 – three couples and a lone taxi driver. Two of them survived gun and knife ambushes. The same killer has been linked to as many as 28 murders – and he claimed to have killed 37 people in his letters to newspapers and police. The case was deemed inactive in 2004 but the San Francisco Police Department reopened it in March of 2007. NOT CONVINCED After the Case Breakers' October announcement, authorities made it clear that they did not officially consider Poste to be a suspect and the case is ongoing. The FBI and California cops pushed back against the team's claims, noting that they have continued to receive hundreds of tips about the case each year. Local police in both Riverside and San Francisco have said the group's claims consisted of ...circumstantial evidence.... The Sun exclusively obtained documents showing Poste does have a criminal history. Court records show that the suspected serial killer was arrested and spent time in jail for assaulting and seriously injuring his wife Mary in their hometown of Groveland, California, in February 2016. KILLER NICKNAME The killer earned his nickname by signing his fourth letter to the press with ...Zodiac... on August 7, 1969. In it, he wrote: ...Dear Editor This is the Zodiac speaking.... From then on the press called him the ...Zodiac Killer... – but it is not known why the killer gave himself that name. He also signed his letters with a circle and a cross over it, resembling a target or a coordinate symbol. Authorities believe that the signature symbols were meant to represent coordinates possibly indicating future killing locations. However, authorities have never fully decoded the symbols.
