MANILA, Philippines — Senate President Vicente Sotto III has hailed the signing into regulation of Republic Act 11594 that raised the penalty for perjury, or the act of creating untruthful statements beneath oath.

Sotto, the principal writer of Senate Invoice 1354, stated: “I want to thank President Duterte for acknowledging the efforts of lawmakers who've labored arduous to provide extra tooth to the perjury provision within the Revised Penal Code. With this new regulation, the general public is assured that fact will prevail always and can all the time be the guideline of all public officers.”

“Makaaasa po ang taumbayan na tanging katotohanan lamang ang mananaig at mangingibabaw sa lahat ng transkasyon ng ating pamahalaan, lalo pa ngayon na mas mabigat na ang parusa kontra sa sinuman, higit na ang mga opisyal ng gobyerno, na mahuhuling nagsisinungaling underneath oath,” Sotto added.

RA 11594 is a consolidation of Senate Invoice 1354 and Home Invoice 8268. The Senate model was handed on August 23 whereas the model of the Home of Representatives was accepted on August 31.

The brand new regulation, which was signed by President Duterte on October 29, amends Articles 183 and 184 of the Revised Penal Code (Republic Act 3815) and raises the jail time period to 6 years to 12 years. The detention interval underneath the previous regulation ranged from 4 months to 2 years.
