PARKLAND shooter Nikolas Cruz was sentenced to life in prison on November 1, 2022, two years after he opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Cruz narrowly avoided the death penalty by a jury of 12 people, nine of whom voted in favor. Florida requires a unanimous vote to hand down the death penalty. Cruz was later arrested and charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder and 17 counts of attempted murder.
