The military's media wing did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the allegation against Naseer. In a previous statement, the military called the shooting ...highly condemnable.... Khan had accused the military of backing the plan to oust him from power. Last week, the military held a news conference to deny the claims. Raoof Hasan, a senior Khan aide, said the ex-PM was shot in the leg at the packed political rally. ...He is in a stable condition,... Hasan said. ...This was an attempt to kill him, to assassinate him.... Former information minister Fawad Chaudhry, who was standing behind Khan, said: ...There was a guy who was in front of the container who had this automatic pistol. ...He fired a burst. Everyone who was standing in the very front row got hit.... He said supporters in the crowd tried to snatch the gun from the attacker. ...In that scuffle he missed the target. There was so much blood on the container,... he said. Khan was later seen limping with a bandage on his foot as he waved and smiled at the crowds. Footage from the scene showed him appearing in pain while he was carried to an ambulance as aides battled to hold back hysterical crowds. Video emerged later of the alleged gunman confessing: ...I came to kill Imran Khan.... The suspect \- named as M Naveed from Sodhra in Wazirabad \- was arrested with a 9mm pistol and two empty magazines in his possession. Although initial reports suggested there were two gunmen, Naveed claimed he had acted alone and his only target was the former PM. Police sources said he claimed he suddenly decided to assassinate the politician because he was "misleading people". Four more members of Khan's PTI party were hurt in the dramatic shooting on the sixth day of his long march from Lahore to the capital Islamabad \- 120 miles from the scene of the shooting. "The investigators have different opinions so far. We will reach a conclusion soon. The arrested man has a criminal past \- street crimes \- and does not have any political backing." Khan has been pushing for new snap elections after being ousted from power in April, delivering speeches at gatherings across the country. The attack happened less than a week after Khan began his march from Lahore \- the capital of Punjab province \- with thousands of supporters. NO-CONFIDENCE VOTE Since he was ousted in a no-confidence vote in parliament in April, Khan has alleged that his removal was engineered by his successor, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, and the US. Both the new premier and Washington have denied the allegations. The Oxford-educated son of a wealthy Lahore family, Khan had a reputation as a playboy until his retirement from international cricket. Pakistan's government has repeatedly rejected his demands for a snap poll saying it will hold elections next year, as planned. Last month, Pakistan's election commission disqualified him from holding public office in a case he branded "politically motivated". He had been accused of incorrectly declaring details of gifts from foreign dignitaries and proceeds from their alleged sale. The gifts included Rolex watches, a ring and a pair of cufflinks. Last year, Khan also sparked fury after blaming an epidemic of rapes in his country on women wearing ...very few clothes... because men were not ...robots.... He repeated his ...common sense... belief that revealing clothes had an ...effect on men.... He said: ...If a woman is wearing very few clothes, it will have an impact on the men unless they are robots. It's just common sense.... The then-prime minister also suggested what was accepted depended on the culture in which someone lives. His remarks sparked a backlash \- and his second wife Reham Khan slammed him as a ...defiant, stubborn rape apologist.... Pakistan has a long history of political violence.
