A VICIOUS dad who shook his baby son to death has today been jailed for life. Brutal James Lawton attacked Colby Lawton in a late-night drunken rage at their home in Newbury, Berkshire, leaving the little lad with brain damage that resembled injuries typical of a 90mph car crash.

Stroud was today cleared of charges of causing or allowing the death of a child and causing cruelty to a child after the jury returned majority verdicts. The jury had heard how little Colby had let out a high-pitched scream after he was shaken violently by his drunken dad in a late-night rage. The four-week-old had suffered 50 broken bones, a skull fracture and partial strangulation before he died. Reading Crown Court heard that there were more than 70 different bruises on the boy. He was shaken so hard his brain was damaged so bad it resembled injuries typical of a 90mph car crash. Nicholas Syfrett QC, defending, said: ...Every aspect of this trial has shown the people involved go from 1-100 with their actions,... arguing that the attack could not have been pre-meditated, as the prosecution argued. Sentencing Lawton Ms Justice Stacey, said: ...I do accept that you did not intend to kill Colby as you are a man who acts spontaneously, but you did intend to cause him serious bodily harm. "It was a spur-of-the-moment decision. Colby's killing came from the serious injuries you inflicted in the days earlier, which would have been very painful for him.... Lawton was sentenced to life imprisonment of 17 years minimum in custody, having to serve the full time stated before he can be considered for parole.
